Note that it is not, Home Sweet, Unpacked and Tidy, Home...
My apologies for being absent for the past few days. I drove a day from SoCal to my parents home, spent a couple of days with them, loaded my car onto a trailer and then the 3 of us began the several day trek back to the middle. Luckily we had a safe and relatively low key journey back to my previous home. By the time we got here that night we were way too exhausted to consider unloading anything, so after getting some sleep we took on the unloading bright and early. One of the brilliant things about living in a sorority house is that my things don't have to be unloaded into my apartment, but instead can sit outside in a common area while I organize.
The housekeeper wasn't able to get the room cleaned before we got here, which is okay, I prefer to take care of the majority of my own cleaning (aside from the bathroom...if your job includes the benefit of a housekeeper, you might as well enjoy it!). I can honestly say I haven't scrubbed the baseboards in awhile, so I crawled around on the floor to get things good and clean and began moving furniture. I had given some furniture to our chef (who was more than happy to leave it for me, but I really was ready to part with it and had made a commitment to him) so we moved that out to start. Then I realized that the plan that I had in my head for a new furniture arrangement wasn't going to work, so I started moving things around and am pretty happy with how it turned out. Once I get things completely unpacked I'll post a picture or two.
Yesterday I took the day off to plan for an upcoming trip for a house director conference and a road trip with a wonderful friend that will follow. I didn't actually mean to take the whole day off, but honestly, in the end it was a desperately needed break after the insanity of the last month. My whole body was aching from weeks of being in a car, sleeping in hotel beds, moving boxes and furniture and so on...it was heavenly to just sit and watch "vintage" television for awhile.
Today I have plans to meet with a friend who advises at another chapter and then get back to the unpacking in earnest. The only other break I plan to take today is to "shop" in my best friends closet for fun new items to take along on my upcoming trip. We'll catch up more soon!

Expect the unexpected...
In a truly bizarre turn of events, it turns out that I will not be moving to my "new home"...sometimes things don't turn out how you plan. At this point I don't know what the future will hold, but what I do know is that unfortunately this situation didn't turn out to be a fit. No one is at fault, no one is to blame, it just wasn't quite right which is better to know now than later when there is plenty of summer left for them to find a replacement and for me to get myself straightened out too.
I've spent the last couple of days with my two very best friends in the world and that has been amazing. I'm spending the next three days on my own, which will be wonderful as well. I have a lot of things to work/think through.
I've enjoyed sharing my experiences with you through these few posts I've made, so I think I will continue on with my blogging. It clearly won't be about the journey and new job as I intended, but instead about whatever happens to grab my attention that day. I hope you'll come along on that journey as well :)

We did it! (think Elle Woods when reading that)
We have safely arrived at my new home. I'm sure I'll back track and share some more about the journey, but for now let's focus on the present.
We got here around 8:30 last night, which felt like 2am to us (not because of time changes, but because of driving for FOUR days!). What I can say for sure is thank goodness we are such good friends, not everyone can take a road trip of that magnitude together and come out smiling at the end. I think we did exceptionally well and I'm so glad BFF is along for this experience.
My new home/job is beautiful. The house is as old as the one I am coming from in the Midwest, which makes it pretty old for California. It has an enormous amount of architectural charm as well as gorgeous details like fireplaces, various types of molding and the chandeliers are to die for. I look forward to sharing some pictures with you soon and cannot wait for friends to visit and see it first hand. We did a full house tour last night and to be quite honest I was so exhausted that I don't think I took in just how lovely everything is. There are some areas that have a bit of that well worn, loved and cherished look to it, but I like that, it shows the age and significant use of the home.
We got a quick peek at my apartment, as the current HD is still residing here and I didn't want her to feel like we were invading her privacy. It is very sweet and I believe it will be enormously user friendly. The wall color is being changed from green to a more neutral beige/taupe which I think I will prefer with the new furnishings. For those of you who know me well, I have selected yet another blue sofa (every sofa I've had as an adult has been blue...I don't know why, but it's true) so it will look very crisp against the neutral wall. I'm excited to see what else the designer and my new supervisor have put together for the room. It's funny, the designer was advocating for a coffee table and a particular bed positioning, both of which J declined because she wouldn't care for it...she is on the money as to my preferences as well :) Because the current HD is still living here I am having a new experience, which is awfully fun...BFF and I are living in one of the girls suites for these couple of days. It is a wonderful slumber party atmosphere and I love that we are doing this together.
Perhaps the most charming thing that has happened since my arrival though was J telling me that she had a gift for me. I thought, isn't she sweet? She didn't need to go to that trouble. Well....my dear, dear friend Carol sent ahead something to greet me when I arrived, a lovely pillow that bears a beautiful sentiment that I will hold dear, always. I am not ashamed to admit that I got very teary in front of BFF and J while reading the card that accompanied the gift, quite possibly the most lovely card I have ever received. Thank you Carol, you are a treasure of a friend and I will miss seeing you often, but will cherish our time together, be it in person, on the phone or skyping.
SoCal awaits, so I will sign off for now. Until soon, much love! K

Poor internet in our hotel tonight
more soon...it was a good day, great drive through the mountains!
Awake!
For the first time in maybe a month...I woke up just before the alarm went off AND I got about 7 hours of sleep, I call that a huge WIN!
BFF is awake too, all I can say is, good luck south west America, good luck :) We are coming to see you!
PS-Hotel, not too bad, well except for the complete lack of hot water in the sink or shower :( Maybe tonight's lodging will include hot water :) Until then...

A mixed bag of a day...
BFF and I got a little bit of a late start (about an hour behind our original plan) but we made it up by taking a route we had never used before...bonus! We stopped in the cutest little town and had lunch, billboards work! The food was amazing and the homemade pie was darned good too. I got a kolache to go for a treat in the morning. We made a couple of other little stops for touristy things, good, good times! I'd go into more detail, but I still want to keep the locations kind of vague. Just know it was a beautiful day in the middle, aside from the vicious winds.
Unfortunately my parents, who have my possessions with them, did not have as successful of a day. They blew the radiator on their truck, along with the belts and pulleys and everything...after a $400 tow, yes $400 tow they are spending an extra night in a hotel on the road while they await repairs (totaling who knows what horrifying amount) tomorrow. They seem to be taking it in stride, but I feel just terrible because were it not for my move they would not be taking this particular trip :(
So there it is, some good, some bad and nothing to be done about it except carry on and make the best of it. BFF is currently in the face washing, teeth brushing portion of the evening, I will follow asap...more tomorrow!
